Developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to improve transparency is part of our commitment to continually assess the climate footprint of all aspects of our products and manufacturing processes. Maglin believes that EPDs will play a key role in helping us—and you—make informed choices moving forward. What are EPDs?
An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is a concise, standardized, third-party verified report which communicates clearly and without bias the environmental performance or impact of a product or material over its lifetime.
An EPD tells the lifecycle story of a product in a single document, focusing on information about a product’s environmental impact, such as global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution, ozone creation, and greenhouse gas emissions.
Essentially, EPDs offer a snapshot of vital data to inform and empower decision-making in much the same way that nutritional information does on food labels.
Why do they deserve your attention?
An EPD is a disclosure tool that helps purchasers better understand a product’s sustainable qualities and environmental repercussions to make more informed product selections.
EPDs measure and quantify a product’s environmental impact at every stage of its life cycle (resource extraction or harvesting, processing, manufacturing, transportation, use, and end-of-life), providing a more transparent view of the environmental cost.
How do they impact your work?
EPDs help achieve EPD and LCA credits in many certification schemes, including LEED®, SITES®, Green Globes™, and BREEAM®, among others.
Moreover, EPDs allow you to specify more environmentally sound products and reduce the risk of them being replaced with substandard alternatives. Adding EPD requirements to your project specification ensures your project is executed to plan and protects and reinforces your specifying decisions.
